KISS Celebriducks Going Fast
From: The Miami Herald
Every once in a while, two
entirely different things come together to form something new and wonderful.
Peanut butter and jelly. Abbott and Costello. Ham and eggs. Peanut butter
and Costello. The list goes on and on.
This gift concept is another example of this phenomenon. What probably
happened was this:
Some marketing people were sitting around a conference table,
trying to "'brainstorm"' an idea for a product, and they got into an
argument. On one side was a guy saying, "We need to put out a product that
would appeal to fans of the legendary rock band Kiss." On the other side was
a guy saying, "No! We need to put out a product that can be used as a bath
toy!" And then, just when it looked as though they had reached a stalemate,
a light bulb went on over their heads, and they decided to ingest powerful
narcotics.
The result is the KISS Celebriducks, a set of four rubber ducks shaped
vaguely like the members of Kiss. They go with pretty much any bathroom
decor, and make a fun and educational toy for anybody except children under
the age of 21.

Formed in 1973, KISS is one of rock n roll's most enduring groups. Though they're famous for their outlandish makeup and wild costumes, such songs as "Rock and Roll All Nite", "Beth" and "Detroit Rock City" remain rock radio staples to this day. The current incarnation of KISS features original members GENE SIMMONS and PAUL STANLEY, as well as ERIC SINGER and TOMMY THAYER.
Valley native Bill Starkey began KISS fan club 30 years ago
From: Mark Bennett of TribStar.com
Two things are certain about the birth of the KISS Army -- Bill Starkey founded
that fan club as a Terre Haute teen-ager in 1975, and "it's a very bizarre story"
as he puts it.
So let's start at the end.
Starkey is now a 49-year-old elementary teacher at Indianapolis Public
School 109. His third-graders aren't too familiar with KISS -- that quartet
of face-painted, platform-heeled rockers who hit it big with 1970s anthem tunes
such as "Rock and Roll All Night." Some of those kids' parents remember KISS.
But not like Starkey does.
KISS hailed from New York. But their most persistent fan worked from a
basement in Terre Haute.
It was 1975. The primary rock 'n' roll radio station in town, WVTS, would play
anything from obscure album cuts by Robin Trower to FM staples by The Beatles
and The Who. But WVTS absolutely would not play any songs by KISS, a new band
Starkey had seen in concert elsewhere around the Midwest. The programming
director, Rich Dickerson, wouldn't budge, Starkey says.
When Starkey and his friends called the WVTS request line, "They'd laugh and
say, we don't play KISS."
What happened next is part of rock music folklore, and it comes in two
versions -- the well-known mythical tale, or the less widely understood truth.
The myth, favored by KISS star Gene Simmons and the band's official
publicity, claims Starkey and his KISS Army -- totaling nearly a
thousand fans -- surrounded the WVTS studios in the woods near West Terre
Haute and refused to leave until the disc jockeys finally relented and
played KISS.
Survived KISS period: Bill Starkey, who founded the KISS Army in Terre
Haute back in 1975, is now 49 years old and a third-grade teacher in the
Indianapolis Public Schools system. (Photo courtesy Bill Starkey)
Dramatic as that sounds, it never happened. As one of Starkey's KISS Army
rank-and-file members Mike Leslie explains, "The myth is kind of good for
their reputation, but we weren't that diabolical back then."
In reality, the process was more like water torture. Six months' worth of
phoned-in KISS requests by Starkey and his friends slowly chipped away the
station's resistance. Starkey's Terre Haute North classmate Rob Smith, using
the cover of one of Leslie's albums, produced the first-ever KISS T-shirts
in the print shop at the high school, where they became a hit. And then came
a letter-writing campaign, threatening WVTS's demise and trashing the
station's mainstays, such as Aerosmith.
But the real icebreaker turned something far less sexy and outrageous -- the
free-market system. A new station, WPFR, hit the airwaves and, of course,
immediately seized the neglected KISS market share. "Rock and Roll All Night"
is exactly what WPFR did. And when word came that KISS had been booked for a
concert in Hulman Center that November, Dickerson realized his teen-age nemesis
could give WVTS the upper hand in the battle for listeners.
So Dickerson asked Starkey to send him more of those pro-KISS letters,
vowing to read one each night at 5 o'clock.
The concert turned into a sellout. And when the band's PR people found out,
they excitedly begged WVTS to tell them how it happened.
Carrying the banner: KISS Army members carry a banner touting the band's
scheduled concert 30 years ago this month in Hulman Center. "They told them,
'There's this 18-year-old idiot in his basement who calls himself the KISS
Army,'" Starkey says.
The concert on Nov. 21, 1975, drew 11,026 fans -- nearly a thousand
more than Elvis Presley attracted here four months earlier. "It was crazy,"
Starkey recalls. "KISS could not have done anything wrong." KISS even was
greeted by his grassroots KISS Army (which included four buddies wearing
KISS-like face paint known as the Unknown Soldiers) when the band members
arrived on a plane at Hulman International Airport. The State High band
performed. (North and South wanted free tickets, Starkey remembers, and
they'd all been sold.) The real Army -- the U.S. kind -- also came, and
gave the wild musicians a motorcade escort into town, where they visited the
WVTS studios and then rocked Hulman Center.
Later, Starkey feuded with KISS when its Army spread nationwide and the band
chose to base it in larger markets. But over the years, he's made peace with
longtime band members Paul Stanley and Simmons, considers current KISS guitarist
Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer friends, and even received a thank-you plaque
from the band at one of their Hulman Center concerts. (They've played here
eight times.)
"They had to finally give credit where credit is due," says Pat Kelly,
another former Terre Haute KISS Army member. "It was Bill."
Kelly sees Starkey at an annual KISS expo in Indianapolis each year. Leslie
spins his old KISS LPs "when I get, as my kids call it, in my hippie moods,"
and his 4-year-old grandson's favorite song is "Rock and Roll All Night."
They're 49, like Starkey, and many of the other KISS fans who helped make
Terre Haute "a part of history" -- at least, rock history.
As for Starkey, he saw KISS at Verizon Music Center in Noblesville last
July. And he's still recognized in rock circles as the founder of the KISS
Army. "Anytime VH1 has done a KISS special, they interview me," Starkey says.
The KISS Army even got mentioned recently by Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show"
and in a "Simpsons" episode.
"Anytime pop culture gets a hold of something I did in my basement, it just
blows my mind," Starkey says.
With the 30th anniversary of the KISS Army's public birth in Terre Haute
coming this Monday, Starkey just wishes his hometown would just recognize
that.
"It's still a part of history," he says.

KISS ROCK THE NATION LIVE! - Review
From: AllMusic.com By Greg Prato
KISS has issued countless home videos and DVD's over the years, so it's understandable to assume that their 2005 model, ‘Rock the Nation: Live,' treads similar water. But unlike the others, this double DVD set reconstructs the complete set of a KISS ‘rock' concert (2003's KISS Symphony saw the band collaborate with…a symphony). And in this case, the group's 2004 summer tour is showcased - by combining highlights from shows in Washington, D.C., and Virginia Beach. While hardcore fans of the original line-up may frown upon the release since Ace Frehley and Peter Criss aren't present (replaced by Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer, respectively), there is quite a lot to attract longtime admirers of the group. First off, in addition to the expected classics, the DVD sees the group dust off quite a few tracks that had rarely been played before (some making their live debut), including such standouts as "Got To Choose," "Love Her All I Can," and as a bonus bit, "Goin' Blind." Secondly, there are a few interesting gadgets not included on any previous KISS DVD releases, most notably a ‘KISS Powervision/Select-A-KISS' option, which lets you zero in on the specific KISS member of your choosing. One complaint though is the annoying constant presence of pre-recorded, scantily clad strippers dancing away on screens behind the band, rather than close-up shots of the group itself (which would have come in handy for the poor buggers stranded all the way up in the nose bleeds). From a sound and visual point of view, ‘Rock the Nation: Live' is arguably the finest live KISS DVD to hit the marketplace. One can only hope that when KISS finally decides tothe vaults, vintage shows will be on par with this.
Eric Carr Rocking On!
From: The Archives of Kat's Eyes By: Tia
Rock and Roll Lost a foremost leader among drummers on November
24, 1991. Kat's Eyes is proud to revisit its tribute to Eric from
our July Archives.
Eric
Carr, what more can I say? Soon it will be his birthday. Since
ascending to heaven, the angles are surely rockin'. So many
interviews, news articles, and facts about the fox have been
written. With this piece, we salute the legacy of this most
talented individual, Paul Caravello, a.k.a. Eric Carr.
Not an original member of Kiss, Eric Carr was automatically
accepted and held in high regard by KISS fans across the world.
I can just see him standing high above his kit at the end
of his solo. At less than 5 feet 8 inches and 145 pounds,
Eric looked 7 feet tall at the end of his super-human drum
solo. Eric was born Paul Caravello in Brooklyn, New York on
July 15, 1950, and has two sisters, Loretta and Sissy. Loretta
is involved with the official Eric Carr website. Occasionally
a fan can purchase a personal piece that belonged to Eric
by visiting that site. As a boy, Eric hoped to become a scientist,
astronaut, or artist. Then it happened... He discovered rock
n' roll the way so many others did in the early '60s, due
to the arrival of the Beatles and the British Invasion. Ringo
Starr was the inspiration that moved Eric to take up the drums
by age 14. Eric began drumming on magazines until his parents
bought him his first proper drum set shortly thereafter. Left
handed in everything he did, except play drums. As so many
young aspirating musicians, Eric had a long road ahead and
his share of dues to pay on his journey to the top.
In the meantime, Eric was of age to fight, our nation was
at war in Vietnam. Eric avoided the military draft by purposely
failing the mental and physical examinations. He did the just
opposite of everything he was supposed to. Further proof that
not only Eric was talented, he was smart. I can imagine this
as a comical episode of Eric's at his review. Although most
people know Eric was a gas range repairman, he also worked
as a file clerk for the Department Of Criminal Justice. He
also sliced cold cuts in a Queens supermarket, and later worked
with his father delivering refrigerators and mixing cement.
Just months before Eric joined Kiss, he was still working
with his dad repairing gas ranges. Eric was an excellent repairmen
in Brooklyn and he enjoyed working with his dad, a sign of
close family ties. Eric's parents still show their support
of Eric's legacy and dedication to the fans by appearing expos
on occasion.
The year is 1966. Paul Caravello, and the Cellermen, were
hired by a young 16 year old up-and-coming singer, Crystal
Collins. Crystal and the Cellarmen soon entered a Brooklyn
recording studio, and recorded "When I Grow Tired" and "No
Matter When". Crystal performed on lead vocals, with the Cellarmen
and Eric doing background vocals. These recordings were pressed
on the Jody label. The label also recorded the Cellarmen's
other release, "I Found You". Eric did lead vocals and played
drums on this piece. The recording had some airplay though
is was not a great success. The band performed at Bar Mitzvahs
and weddings throughout NYC. During the '70s, Eric had become
a great admirer of such hard rock acts as Led Zeppelin and
the New York Dolls, although his bands throughout the decade,
Creation and Mother Nature/Father Time, were more disco-based.
I wonder if he ever listened to KISS? Eric narrowly escaped
a club fire, and saved the life of a female singer during
the 1970's. The fire claimed the lives of two of his then
band members. Eric would live on to become "the premier drummer"
of the 1980's.
In the meantime, Eric made plans for his higher education.
Could you score a 96 on your algebra test? Well the fox did.
He attended college for a few years, but left to pursue his
first love, music. Before applying to Kingsbourgh college,
Eric was accepted to Princeton University. But, due to lack
of funds, he soon moved on. Next Eric joined Salt and Pepper.
This was another step along his climb to stardom. Like so
many other greats, there are those that just want to Rock
and Roll. Lucky for us, Eric decided to Rock.
At the birth of the new decade, the '80s, Eric had become
frustrated that his previous bands had failed to break through
to the big time. He was looking for something better. As fate
would have it, KISS' drummer, Peter Criss, was looking to
make a move too. Peter was leaving KISS. In June of 1980,
a friend happened to bump into Eric. The friend relayed to
Eric that KISS was holding auditions to replace Peter. So,
Eric submitted his application to KISS in an orange envelope
so it would stand out. He managed to get a try-out through
KISS' management, and jammed with the band on June 23rd. Before
leaving his audition with KISS, he asked for their autographs,
thinking he may never meet them again. One week later, on
July 1st, Eric was invited to join KISS. With a massive tour
of Europe and Australia already booked and fast approaching,
Eric and the guys brainstormed to come up with a stage name
for the new member, and a persona that would fit in with the
band's look. Eric Carr's early stage name was Rusty Blade.
I like this name.Of course, the name was later nixed, but
Eric, being playful as usual, used it as his hotel check-in
name when on tour. When Eric Carr joined the band in 1980,
there was talk of him actually recording a KISS solo album.
Therefore, the band commissioned Ken Kelly, the legendary
artist who painted the 4 solo album covers, to paint one of
Eric. The painting still resides with the Cravello family.
Caravello was officially dubbed Eric Carr, and after a failed
attempt at being the hawk, Eric became the Fox. Eric's drumming
fit perfectly with the band. His speed and technique made
him an immediate success among KISS fans. He generally had
more of a heavy metal drum sound than his predecessor. Strangely,
KISS did not make full use of his talents until their 1982
release, "Creatures of the Night". The drums were intended
to sound like guns or cannons being fired. Check out the tracks
on this recording and feel the proof. Eric's live drum solos
of this period still echo in my head. This tremendous sound
was like that of heavy hitters, Led Zeppelin's John Bonham
and Deep Purple's Ian Paice. KISS was entering a new era.
At this point, it seems that Eric was pointing the way.
Eric remained a member of KISS for the remainder of the '80s.
His talents can be heard on such hit albums as Lick It Up
and Animalize, among others. He played venues the world over.
KISS' members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley wrote the majority
of the band's songs during Eric's decade of KISS drumming.
It is known that Eric was responsible for co-writing such
hits as "All Hell's Breaking Loose"," "Under the Gun",
and "Little Caesar". Eric performed lead vocals on "Little
Caesar". Shortly after KISS finished their Hot in the Shade
tour, Eric was shockingly diagnosed with cancer. Despite what
was believed to be a successful operation to remove his tumor
initially, he lost his battle to cancer on November 21, 1991,
at the young age age of 41. Gene and Paul, as a tribute to
Eric, included an unreleased drum track from 1981 on their
1992 album, Revenge. The track is rightfully called "Carr
Jam 1981."
Eric's work is still just a CD away. It is as clear and magnificent
as the day it was recorded. And as previously stated, I am
sure the angels are jamming to Eric's beat. Eric, in my opinion,
is KISS as much as any other member, past or present. In 1999,
two releases became Eric Carr Icons. These are the biographical
home video, "Tale of the Fox" as well as an EP titled "Rockheads".
"Rockheads" included original music from a children's cartoon
Eric was creating towards the end of his life. The characters
are of course rock stars. "Rockology" was released in 2000.
On July 15, in memory, take out your favorite KISS CD from
the era of Eric Carr, and ROCK WITH A LEGEND.
Family Jewels Update
News has been a bit slow being posted here due to producing and sending a video for

From: KISSArmyWarehouse.com
Now available only at KISS Army Warehouse, the official DVD release of KISS
Meets the Phantom of the Park.
"The dynamic rock group KISS makes its first feature film debut in this
spine-tingling mystery that matches KISS’s extraordinary powers against a mad
scientist. KISS is scheduled for a sell-out concert at Southern California’s
Magic Mountain amusement park when park-goers begin to vanish without a trace.
KISS use their extraordinary powers to find and destroy the diabolical plans
of the mad scientist and his army or robots. Features a KISS performance and
stunning visual effects. Also known as Attack of the Phantoms and KISS in Attack
of the Phantoms."
"The cartoon style music that appears during fight sequences was added in order
to get a lower certificate rating to enable younger KISS fans (the majority)
to see the film. Peter Criss was dubbed, because he wouldn't show up to do
looping (re-recording lines in post-production). Ace Frehley's stunt man was
African American, so in the fight scenes you can see Ace go from being white
to black and vice-versa. All four members of Kiss hated the movie and smear it
to this day."

Catching Up With Bruce
From: KULICK.net
A lot to catch up with, so let me first start with Grand Funk. The season has
slowed down for our shows, but it has been a great summer of touring. We got to
play in Little Rock and Governer Huckabee who plays a mean bass in a cover bandd for us again! Always fun to see politicians rocking out. We also were in
Mobile Alabama, our first show in the Gulf region since the Katrina Hurricane.
You can still see signs of the damage of course, but the show and crowd were
amazing. We had Loverboy on the bill, and they are all friends of ours. Mike
Reno the singer got up on stage and sang "Closer to Home (I'm Your Captain)"
and "We're An American Band" which was amazing. He is a great singer and a
great guy.

The 5th annual Baltimore KISS expo was a huge success with hundreds in
attendance. Everyone had a great time from the packed lounge at the KISS
karaoke to the expo itself. This was by far the biggest turn-out the KISS
army has seen for this annual event. I would like to thank all the vendors,
KISS fans and bands who attended this year for helping making it so successful.
A special thanks to Eric singer for being one of the best guests we have had so
far. Thanks again to everyone and see you next October for the 6th annual
Baltimore KISS expo!

The band members LOOK and ACT like the "real thing" (...well,
that's scary...!!) -- especially "GENE SIMMONS" and "PAUL STANLEY" with
the cockiness and cheekiness of the real Gene and Paul (lock up your
girlfriends!!!).
They played a wide selection of KISS numbers, covering the band's 30-odd
year career -- from good old Deuce, and Black Diamond, to Unholy off the 1992
album Revenge.
