Rock god spots a des res... our old cathedral! Jan 27 2006
From: iccoventry.icnetwork.co.uk By Dayle Crutchlow
HELL-RAISING singer Gene Simmons took one look at Coventry's Cathedral ruins and
posed the instinctive question of any rich rocker: "Hey, is it for sale?"
And one other thing puzzled him... if it was bombed in the war, why haven't they
replaced the windows yet?
Simmons' extraordinary interest in Coventry's most treasured monument was sparked
by his visit to the city to film an episode of the popular Channel 4 TV programme
Rock School.
He spotted the ruins during a break in filming at the nearby Golden Cross Inn.
The lead singer of the band Kiss was with event promoter John Oliver who recalls:
"We were standing outside the pub and Gene pointed to the building.
"He asked what it was and if it was derelict. I told him that no, it was the old
Coventry Cathedral and it was bombed during the war. He said 'And they haven't
repaired the windows yet?' Then he asked if it was for sale. He seemed disappointed
when I told him that it probably wasn't."
Today cathedral bosses were flattered by the American guitarist's interest.
Development manager Jo Hibbard said: "I'm not surprised Mr Simmons admired the
cathedral ruins.
"However, I can assure him, and anyone else with an interest in buying Coventry's
historic and beautiful cathedral ruins, that they are not for sale!
"Of course, maintaining this historic site is a very expensive business, so we are
always willing to discuss support to help with the upkeep and development of the
whole cathedral."
The Coventry episode of Rock School will be screened on February 12.
Mr Oliver said: "We had a lovely time out of it and it went really well.
"Gene was a really nice bloke. He had that rock star air about him but he didn't
turn his nose up at talking to anyone, or signing autographs and posing for
pictures.
"A lot of people still can't believe we had Gene Simmons up here so it will be
good to see it on TV."

The best way to describe "The Ace" is that in a world full of copies, he remains an
original. Let's face it, Ace was everyone's favorite when he was in Kiss - nobody is
cooler than ACE. The smoking guitar, the original and screaming lead guitar, the voice,
the songwriting...ACE is an extremely talented musician.
This collection of live songs represents some of his best work during the period after
his highly publicized departure from one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
Included on this GREATEST HITS LIVE CD with INCREDIBLE LIMITED EDITION 3D cover art,
are tracks from the Megaforce days and features members of Ace Frehley's Comet: Anton
Fig, John Regan, Ted Howarth and Richie Scarlett with Jamie Oldaker on drums live in
London, plus other special guests. Sit back and enjoy Ace Frehley in an atmosphere
where he does his best work...LIVE!
The group KISS took their name from an acronym for 'Knights in Satan's Service.'
From: Snopes.com
If demonic-visaged singer from whose mouth issued both streams of fire and an
unbelievably long tongue dripping with blood, playing raucously loud rock 'n'
roll to armies of rabidly devoted (and heavily pre-pubescent) fans. It probably
didn't take much to convince concerned adults that when these guys decided to use
the moniker 'KISS,' they didn't exactly have the innocence of the Crystals' "Then
He Kissed Me" or the Beach Boys' "Kiss Me Baby" in mind.
When you factor in that KISS was the first popular band to make a huge
lighted backdrop bearing its name an integral part of their stage shows,
that KISS was always rendered in all upper case letters (as if it were an acronym),
and that the KISS logo employed a lightning bolt font which made the final two
letters reminiscent of insignia used by the Nazis' para-military Schutzstaffel
(SS) units, maybe you couldn't blame folks for thinking that 'KISS' had a much
darker hidden meaning.
But, as KISS bassist Gene Simmons explained in his autobiography, the
rumors were . . . just rumors, even if the band didn't exactly go out of its
way to discourage them:
. . . misinformation about the band began to spread in the southern Bible
Belt states, including a rumor that the name KISS stood for Knights in Satan's
Service, and that the four of us were devil worshipers. Ironically, this rumor
started as a result of an interview I gave in Circus magazine after our first
album; in response to a question, I said that I sometimes wondered what human
flesh tastes like. I never wanted to really find out, but I was curious
intellectually. Later on, this comment seemed to ignite the whole idea that in
some way KISS was aligned with devil worship. When I was asked whether I
worshipped the devil, I simply refused to answer for a number of reasons: the
first reason, of course, was that it was good press. Let people wonder. The
other reason was my complete disregard for the people who were asking. Through the
years, whenever religious fanatics accosted me, especially in the southern states,
and quoted the Old Testament at me, I would quote them back chapter and verse.
They didn't know that I had been a theology major in school. An idiot is an
idiot . . . whether he quotes the Bible or not.
So, why did they choose 'KISS'? According to Simmons, the adoption of that name
was surprisingly quick and mundane:
One day Paul [Stanley] and Peter [Criss] and I were driving around, brainstorming
for new names. I had thought of a few, like Albatross, but I wasn't happy with
any of them. At one point -- we were stopped at a red light -- Paul said, "How
about KISS?" Peter and I nodded, and that was it. It made sense. Hindsight is
20/20, of course, and since then people have talked about all the benefits of
the name: how it seemed to sum up certain things about glam rock at the time; how
it was perfect for international marketing because it was a simple word that
people understood all over the world. But we just liked the name, and that
was that.

Bruce Kulick Rocks With Grand Funk Railroad
From: Tia at Kat's Eyes Products
The place: Executive Inn Rivermont of Owensboro, Kentucky. The when: Saturday,
January 21, 2006 at 8 PM. That is where it happened! Backing up just a bit I
should tell you that we arrived at the place at around 4 PM. We saw one unimposing
figure come strolling toward us in the lobby area. Simply spoke, "Bruce, how are
you doing?" In his own way Bruce replied with a smile, "Great, Steve's friends
right?"
He headed on through completely anonymous to the Grand Funk Fans and a
ton of KISS fans. Wow, how in the world can he walk around the lobby completely
unobserved by his fans?
After dinner, we noticed the lines building at the entrance of the showroom.
Made me remember how it used to be when we would pile against the doors of the
venues just waiting to get our chance at that cramped hole in front of the stage.
Then my thoughts returned to reality. On the other side of the door I was gonna
see Bruce Kulick doing what he does so well, playing his heart out. I have to
say, I had never been to a GFR show. But, the tunes I remember so well from a
Greatest Hits LP that I once wore thin by playing it over, over,
over, and over! Man, what about Sweet Connie, doing her act? That one line
always seemed so naughty. What did she do? We began to move slowly into the
doorway and met a gentleman there that gave us a pass. Small and simple but it
was just like getting the key to the city. He directed us to a table that
had a sign printed "BAND" on it. We were guests of the band. Great seats
and we were among a group of eleven individuals sporting a GFR Band Pass.
To my left was Allen Tate from EvansvilleKISS.com with his friend
Bob. We hooked up with other fellow KISS fans Anthony and Mike.
As we sat and discussed all things music, we talked about all
the people in our circle of friends that seem more like family.
They told me a lot about GFR. I was quite a bit nervous due to
the fact that I was going to meet a legendary rock band that I
knew only by
their music. The icons of American Rock Music were going to be
meeting and greeting us in a few hours.
Then it happened, these guys hit the stage with one intention, kicking our butts
with some hard driving rock and roll. There was Bruce, Don, Max, Mel, and Tim.
Each song was performed with recording studio accuracy. Don Brewer soloed and
brought the room to its feet. The drum song that followed was a show within
itself. When Max hammered that drum, you could feel the "Thunder!" The energy of
the show was unbelievable. Bruce took his spot center stage with his cover of the
"Star Spangled Banner". The Kulick solo that followed was the same perfect
kick-ass quality that only Bruce can give. Fast, furious, and smooth, he simply
commanded that stage. At that point I realized that Bruce is Bruce no matter
what stage, place, or date. He is the man! That guitar is part of him. He
calls and it answers. There is nothing awkward about his playing. He is the
lead guitarist of GFR, Union, ESP, KISS, and so many others I cannot begin
to think of. This is why you will find Bruce playing on Paul Stanley's new solo
release. Simply said, he is the guitarist of choice by so many top rock bands.
Now back to the show! Locomotion, The Captain, and the encore, American Band made
the fans howl. Don had Uncle Sam's hat and coat on when the band returned for the
encore. This has to be the anthem of the 1970s touring rock band. Don Brewer has
such a youthful approach to his performance. You have gotta love him.
The lights came up. The fans moved out of the showroom with a look of new life on
their faces. The American Band just reminded all of us that rock and roll is alive
and well. The meet and greet was quiet and laid back. The guys signed a few pieces
and took a few photos with us. A class act on their part. The band is so nice and
treated each person there as if he or she was the biggest GFR fan. Of the eleven were
seven Bruce Kulick fans. Of the seven were seven GFR fans. I took a moment to
thank Bruce, not so much for the passes, not so much for the great concert, but
moreover, I thanked Bruce for being so nice every time I have had the
opportunity to talk to him. Don't miss the expos or shows if Bruce is involved.
And, be sure that when Grand Funk Railroad comes to your town that you get on the
train!

KISS Continues to 'Rock The Nation'

KISS is an institution that is more than 30 years strong and will not die. Their new
double DVD, "Rock The Nation," proves how - despite the loss of original members
drummer Peter Criss and guitarist Ace Frehley - the band marches on determined to
prove to the world their validity. Fouding members guitarist Paul Stanley and
bassist Gene Simmons keep the dream alive by adding drummer Eric Singer and
guitarist Tommy Thayer to the mix, trumping up the band's song.
As you may remember, all four members of the original KISS lineup went on a farewell
tour in 2000 with a plan to retire the band. However, they changed their minds.
"What became clear after the end of the farewell tour is that I didn't want to
stop playing, I just wanted to stop playing with those guys," said Paul Stanley.
"We had done something monumental by coming back together but it started to
wane when the old problems reared their heads. The limitations of the band
started to creep in again. It became difficult if not impossible to change the
set list. We ended up playing the same set for three tours. It became old and tense
when people's quirks and personality problems just became evident."
The fans resoundingly didn't want the band to end and KISS responded to their
needs. "I realized that our restrictions were self-imposed. Everybody is entitled
to change their mind," said Stanley. "The line-up changed and took its natural
course. First Peter was gone, then Ace decided he didn't want to go back on
tour. The question is: do we stay home because somebody doesn't want to tour
or do we continue because we want to?"
The first call the band made to replace Criss was their old drummer Eric
Singer (Badlands, Alice Cooper band) from the early 1990s. "It was natural to
get Eric and he was ready to come back," Stanley said. "He's a great drummer, a
fantastic singer and a real team player."
Tommy Thayer, originally from the band Black N' Blue, worked as Frehley's guitar
tech and wound up in the band. "Tommy was the first choice because he was always
the relief hitter sitting on the bench," said Stanley. "He was the guy who would
work with the members of the band so everybody knew their parts. Once he
joined the band, his playing was phenomenal."
New guys Singer and Thayer not only joined the band but also jumped into
Criss' and Frehley's make-up and costumes, which raised a few eyebrows. Stanley
felt the transition was natural. "We resolved ourselves clearly that over 30
years had been spent building four iconic images. To suddenly bring in giraffe-boy
or ant-man was ridiculous. KISS is those four personalities and images," he said.
"You can take a picture of KISS anywhere in the world and show it to somebody and
say, 'Who is this?' Can they name every member, absolutely not, but they know
those images because they are undeniable."
When asked if this move upset Criss or Frehley, Stanley said, "I'm sure - maybe
some more than others, but you don't always get things your way. In a perfect
world, the original band would have been together. When circumstances and
personalities make it impossible then I'm not going to suffer for those bumps
in the road."
While the band has no plans to record a new album they will continue to
tour. "Rest assured there'll be another tour," said Stanley, "As far as new
material goes, the bottom line is people want to hear the classics. They'll
tolerate a few new songs, But why work my ass off to make new songs when they
prefer the older stuff? We have a tremendous amount of archival materialand we
are currently putting the finishing touches on a series that will be similar to
the one Martin Scorsese did with Bob Dylan."
Even though KISS is not recording, Stanley recently completed a new solo album.
He's currently shopping for a label and plans to release the album in 2006,
which will be followed by a solo tour. Regarding the sound of the album, he
said "It sounds like me but with more flexability."
Stanley also hopes to perform "Phantom Of The Opera" on Broadway at some point
after his successful run in Toronto. "That's still in the cards, it's just a
matter of finding the right time," he said. "The work ethic and discipline of
theater is something that would leave most bands in a crying heap. There's no
room for complaints but I thrived in that environment." Stanley and Simmons have
been partners for decades. Although their personalities differ heavily, the
relationship seems to work. "We have a deep and complex relationship based on
understanding it's possibilities and limitations. I think the key to having a good
partnership is to not expect what's impossible and make the most of what is,"
said Stanley. "We are different people, always have been, but we use that to the
best advantages of the band. We're brothers in business."
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame recently announced their new class to be inducted in March
2006. Although KISS has been eligible for years, the band has been constantly
overlooked. Stanley is not surprised. "The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame is a joke.
They prove that year in and out with their nominations. It's about being part of
an exclusive club," he said. "If I decided tomorrow to start my own organization
called The Society Of Rock Legends - who the hell am I? Somehow this organization
got some sort of clout. It has nothing to do with mass impact or mass sales. The
question is: what does it represent? At some point they'll have to cave-in but it
won't change me."
Despite their omission from the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, KISS has been one of the most
influential bands of all times. Many bands steal from KISS and Stanley doesn't mind.
"I think I'm an original in the sense that I created something that became identified
with me. But, my ideas were based upon my heroes and influences. It's just the sum
of those parts that equaled something new," he said. "I'm very flattered that people
have borrowed from what I've done. I did the same. I didn't come up with windmills and
jumping in the air. The road I walked was paved by Steve Marriott, Pete Townsend,
Keith Richards and Robert Plant. It's in the mixture of influences that you come up
with something that yours."
At this point, KISS knows that they can't top themselves but they strive to maintain
the high level of quality that they've established. "We can go horizontal. I don't
know if we can go vertical," said Stanley. "Our new DVD is proof of that. It shows
who we are today and how we've never changed. The band not only still exists, but we
are better than ever. It's not a matter of who's in the band - it's a matter that
it's KISS. KISS has to be more than a name and a bunch of songs."
There has been a rumor circulating for years that Stanley & Simmons plan on
continuing KISS without them, bringing in younger guys. Stanley said, "Anything
is possible. KISS in the sense exists without us becaues the merchandise is all
about the four iconic images. It could happen."

Raucous cafe to bear brand of rock band, developer says
From: The Sun News, By: Dawn Bryant
The band KISS is adding one more ingredient to sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll: coffee.
The rockers, known for slapping their brand on everything from coffins to coasters
since their heyday in the 1970s, will show a more mature side this spring when the first
KISS Coffeehouse makes its debut at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach.
Don't expect the same old laid-back coffee place.
This is KISS, a band known for its legendary partying, stage theatrics and
white-and-black makeup.
Envision servers donning the trademark KISS face paint for special occasions and KISS
classics blaring as a machine whips up the trademark KISS Frozen Rockuccino or a
French KISS Vanilla.
"This concept is a little different," said Brian Galvin, a KISS fan for 31 years who
developed the coffeehouse idea. "It's a stimulating environment to drink a stimulating
beverage."
The coffeehouse will fill a 1,305-square-foot corner space at Celebrity Square,
across from the Key West Grill. It willsometime this spring or early summer.
Officials didn't give an exact date. Galvin said band members Gene Simmons and Paul
Stanley plan to attend the grandng.
Myrtle Beach offers the perfect stage for a KISS Coffeehouse, Galvin said, because
of its appeal to the "Middle America" market, the segment likely to "Rock and Roll
All Nite."
The Hard Rock Cafe, which has Paul Stanley's guitar and signed photos of other
band members, is eager to welcome its new Celebrity Square neighbor, general manager
Mike Davis said.
"Everything that is rock 'n' roll is good for us. One happy family," he said. "I
can't see why it wouldn't work. They are kind of a caffeine, high-energy band so
that makes sense."
If the KISS-themed coffee blends and sweets back up the eye-catching entrance, the
coffeehouse will do well, said Pat Dowling, spokesman for Burroughs & Chapin Co.
Inc., which owns Broadway and prides itself on family values.
"It's different," he said. "It's not offensive at all. It's just fun. People will
see it and say, 'That's cool. That's new. Let's go see.'"
Dowling downplayed the band's once raucous reputation.
"The band KISS was just an act," he said. "I don't think they are after the same
attention anymore." KISS has become a merchandising machine, putting its name and
flair on hundreds of items, including bowling balls, checks, a coffin, ceramic tile
and silver coins.
Signatures Network of San Francisco, which handles licensing for KISS, declined to
comment on the coffeehouse Friday.
Galvin's company, The Galvin Group Inc. in Warwick, R.I., operates two Ben & Jerry
ice cream shops, one in Florida and another in Connecticut. This is Galvin's first
project with the band, and the band's first foray into food, he said.
Galvin plans tomore locations, possibly one in Las Vegas, if this one is a hit,
he said.

ACE FREHLEY: 'I'd Love To Do An Instructional Video'
From: Blabbermouth.net
Guitar World magazine (web site) recently conducted a short interview with original
KISS guitarist Ace Frehley. A few excerpts from the chat follow:
Guitar World: What inspired you to play guitar:
Ace Frehley: "I was raised in a musical household, so I was surrounded by music
all day long. My parents played piano, and my brother and sister played piano
and folk guitar. My brother showed me a few chords on his acoustic guitar. The one
day I visited a friend who had an electric guitar and a small amp, and it changed
my life. I held the guitar in my hands, turned the volume to 10 and hit the low E
string, and the sound just droned. I was hooked! It was like a heroin addict's first
shot of dope."
Guitar World: What was the first song that you learned how to play?
Ace Frehley: "'(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction' by THE ROLLING STONES. Shortly
thereafter, I learned how to play another ROLLING STONES song, 'The Last Time', and
it made me feel so good about myself. Not only did I figure out how to play itbut I
got the exact sound from an Ampeg Reverberocket amp my dad had bought me. I had the
riff and the reverb!"
Guitar World: What was your mosr embarrassing moment onstage?
Ace Frehley: "Getting electrocuted in Lakeland, Florida during the 'Destroyer'
tour. It was right before KISS got wireless guitars. I was walking down these steps
onstage with those very-high-heeled boots. I grabbed the railing because I was losing
my balance. The railing wasn't grounded properly and I got zapped with 240 volts. I
saw sparks and don't remember much else. I was told the roadies carried me offstage.
I had burns on my hand and the band had to stop the show. When I finally regained
consciousness, I couldn't feel my right hand. It was scary."
Guitar World: What have you been doing lately?
Ace Frehley: "I've been working on a solo album and a few film projects. I'd love to
do an instructional video, but I want it to be comedic. [Laughs] I don't want it to
be just another boring how-to-play video. I may not be the world's greatest guitarist,
but at least I'm never boring."

KISS licking bootleggers with the Commerce Clause
From: Law.com
Plaintiffs Gene Klein (aka GENE SIMMONS), PAUL STANLEY and their KISS Catalog, Ltd.
have made some progress in their lawsuit against Passport International Products, a
company that has been selling a DVD of a July 10, 1976 concert the band KISS performed at
New Jersey's Roosevelt Stadium. Cathy Kirkman reports in the Silicon Valley Media Law
Blog that a California district court upheld the federal anti-bootlegging statute, 17
U.S.C. 1101, as constitutional.
Kirkman explains how "the Court concluded that the legislation was within the scope
of the Commerce Clause and not 'fundamentally inconsistent' with the Copyright Clause."
Kulick Brothers DVD/Bruce at NAMM
From: KISSAsylum.com's Keith Leroux
Just spoke to BRUCE KULICK from Hawaii where he is relaxing for a few days. Bruce asked
me to let everyone know that he will be at this year's NAMM convention from January
19-22 at the Anaheim Convention Center. He will be there to celebrate the release of the
KISS Forever instructional DVD. The DVD also features his brother Bob Kulick and will be
released next month by Music Star Productions as part of their Icons Of Rock instructional
series. The DVD showcases both Bruce and Bob performing and talking about various KISS
songs. Russell Dannecker and myself had the pleasure of viewing an unedited advance copy
at Bruce's house last November and from what Bruce played us, this DVD will be sure to
please the fans. Earlier in the week Bruce sent us the artwork for the DVD cover -

GENE SIMMONS Co-Authors 'I Am Indy' Campaign Signature Song
From: Blabbermouth.net
The IndyCar Series has announced that it has forged a unique marketing alliance with
KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons and entertainment industry veteran Richard Abramson,
principals in the Hollywood-based Simmons Abramson Marketing company.
The broad-based agreement will see Simmons Abramson Marketing actively engaged in
the league's marketing, event, public relations, sponsorship, merchandising and
branding efforts — from its IndyCar Series to the venerable Indianapolis 500.
Today's announcement of the partnership is highlighted with the debut of the
"I Am Indy" campaign that is anchored by a signature song, co-authored by
Simmons and BAG. The effort marks the first official theme song for a modern
professional sport. With its growling affirmations and foot-stomping, "We Will
Rock You/We Are the Champions" sensibility, the "I Am Indy" song forges a resonant
link between the drivers and the IndyCar Series fans.
"Indy cars are rockets on the ground. These drivers are modern knights in shining
armor, risking their lives at close to 225 mph," Simmons said. "'I Am Indy' speaks
to the independent spirit in all of us."

KISS Featured On New Millennium DVD Box
From: KISSKollector.com
Millennium – The Complete Third Season, the recently released 6-DVD box
set of the third season of TV series Millennium, features several KISS
sightings as KISS was part of the final season's fifth episode. Of course,
the episode guest starring KISS – titled …Thirteen Years Later – is part of
the box (disc 2), but as a bonus the box also includes a 38 minute documentary
(on disc 6) entitled End Game: Making Millennium Season Three which is dedicated
for the main part to the series’ Halloween special guest starring KISS –
which originally aired on October 30, 1998.
The documentary features some cool backstage footage plus interviews. Cast
and crew proudly reminisce the KISS themed episode. One of their stories
deals with Ace Frehley, who apparently only wanted to participate if he could
play a very big, black man. Due to time limitations that wasn’t possible, and
Ace agreed upon playing the part of a trinity cop (just like Peter Criss,
whereas Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons had other small roles - apart from
appearing as KISS in concert too of course). Originally, Ace had five lines
but those who’ve seen the eposide know that the speaking parts were cut in the
editing room. Click here for some interview footage including KISS, with Gene
fooling around with actor Lance Henriksen and Paul talking about being part
of Millennium. Pictured below is KISS on the set of Millennium with lead
character FBI profiler Frank Black, played by Lance Henriksen.
